3、anewworldthatbecameafriendandliberatoroftheold,astoryofaslave-holdingsocietythatbecameaservantoffreedom,thestoryofapowerthatwentintotheworldtoprotectbutnotpossess,todefendbutnottoconquer.ItistheAmericanstory--astoryofflawedandfalliblepeople,unitedacrossthegenerationsbygrandandenduringideal
4、s.ThegrandestoftheseidealsisanunfoldingAmericanpromisethateveryonebelongs,thateveryonedeservesachance,thatnoinsignificantpersonwaseverborn.Americansarecalledtoenactthispromiseinourlivesandinourlaws.Andthoughournationhassometimeshalted,andsometimesdelayed,wemustfollownoothercourse.Throughmu
5、chofthelastcentury,America'sfaithinfreedomanddemocracywasarockinaragingsea.Nowitisaseeduponthewind,takingrootinmanynations.Ourdemocraticfaithismorethanthecreedofourcountry,itistheinbornhopeofourhumanity,anidealwecarrybutdonotown,atrustwebearandpassalong.Andevenafternearly225years,wehavealo
6、ngwayyettotravel.Whilemanyofourcitizensprosper,othersdoubtthepromise,eventhejustice,ofourowncountry.TheambitionsofsomeAmericansarelimitedbyfailingschoolsandhiddenprejudiceandthecircumstancesoftheirbirth.Andsometimesourdifferencesrunsodeep,itseemsweshareacontinent,butnotacountry.Wedonotacce
