2、greedthatalinkacrosstheEnglishChannelwouldbemutuallybeneficial.However,bothgovernmentsrealizedthatalthoughtheprojectwouldcreatemuchneededjobs,neithercountry’sgovernmentcouldfundsuchamassiveproject.Thus,theydecidedtoholdacontest.Thiscontestinvitedcompaniestosubmittheirplanstocreatealinkacrosst
3、heEnglishChannel.Aspartofthecontest’srequirements,thesubmittingcompanywastoprovideaplantoraisetheneededfundstobuildtheproject,havetheabilitytooperatetheproposedChannellinkoncetheprojectwascompleted,andtheproposedlinkmustbeabletoendureforatleast120years.Tenproposalsweresubmitted,includingvario
4、ustunnelsandbridges.Someoftheproposalsweresooutlandishindesignthattheywereeasilydismissed;otherswouldbesoexpensivethattheywereunlikelytoeverbecompleted.Thesuccessfulproposalplannedforatunnelmadeupoftwo,parallelrailwaytunnelsthatwouldbedugundertheEnglishChannel.Betweenthesetworailwaytunnelswou
5、ldrunathird,smallertunnelthatwouldbeusedformaintenance,includingdrainagepipes,communicationcables,etc.OnDecember10,1993,thefirsttestrunwascompletedthroughtheentireChannelTunnel.Afteradditionalfinetuning,theChannelTunnelofficiallyopenedonMay6,1994.PompeiiexhibitionopensattheNationalMuseumofSin
6、gaporeTheNationalMuseumofSingaporetransportsvisitorsback2,000yearsintimetoexperiencelifeanddeathintheancientRomanEmpire.Anewexhibition,Pompeii:LifeinaRomanVillagerevealsdailylifeinacitysteepedinlegendandmystery.Pompeiianditsneighbouringcitieswereburied—andfrozenintime—afterthefatefuleruptiono
