1、UseofFTIRinpolymericthinfilmsFeichenYangFTIR(Fouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy)isatechniquethatusesFouriertransformtoconverttherawdataofinfraredabsorptionortransmissionintoainfraredspectrum.Essentially,itmeasurestheenergiesthatarecorrespondenttothevibrationofatomsinmoleculeso
2、rmacro-molecules.ThesimplestapplicationofFTIRonpolymersisthatFTIRcanhelptoidentifythefunctionalgroupsinpolymers.Bycomparingthe‘fingerprintregion’ofaobtainedsampletothatofastandardsample,researcherscanalsoidentifyanunknownpolymer.Inthemeantime,researcherscanuseFTIRtomeasurethecon
3、centrationofacertainfunctionalgroup,todeterminetheextentofreaction.Forexample,HelmutReineckeetal[1]usedtheintegratedIRabsorbancein1450-1580cm-1thatincreaseswiththenumberofreactioncirclestoprovetheincreasingnumberofmonomersinthepolymerthinfilm.Besidesthat,whenit’susedspecifically
4、onpolymers,FTIRhavesomeuniqueapplications.First,sincethebondbendingandvibratingmotionsofatomsarenotcompletelyirrelevantwithotheratomsnearby,FTIRcanhelpdeterminethetatcticityofpolymers.Forinstance,DalmoMandellietal[2]usedFTIRwithmultivariatecalibrationtodeterminethetacticityofpol
5、ypropane.Usingsimilarprinciple,FTIRcanalsohelpdeterminetheconformationofpolymerchainsorthecrystallinityofapolymer.ByusingFTIRspectroscopyandcurve-fittingtechniques,YoshioInoueetal[3]developedaproceduretodeterminethecrystallinityofpoly(ε-Caprolactone).Ifweusepolarizedinfraredligh
6、tastheincidentlight,FTIRcandeterminetheorientationofpolymerinthinfilmsorinpolymerbrushes.Sincelightcanonlybeabsorbedwhenthedirectionoflightpolarizationisparalleltothevibrationtransitionmoment,thepolarizedlightcanonlybeabsorbedbyvibrationincertaindirections.BycomparingparallelFTI
