4、ich,inanycase,washardlyconsideredworthyofseriousscholarlyexaminationunderanypretextduringthatearlyperiod.Duringthemiddlepartofthetwentiethcentury,academicinterestinrhetoricwasminimal,andwiththesignificantexceptionofKennethBurke’sbrilliantandoriginalpost-Marxistrhetoricalscholarsh
5、ip,littlescholarlyworkwasdonetolinkrhetoricaltheorytoanyotherschoolofthought,leastofallMarxism.Thecurrentrenewalofacademicinterestinrhetorichascoincidedwiththeemergenceandgrowthofpostmodernism(andthefalloftheUSSR),andrelativelyfewrecentorcontemporaryrhetoricalscholarshaveshownser
6、iousinterestinfindingcommongroundbetweenarevitalizedrhetoricontheonehand,andwhatissometimesaccusedofbeingabehind-the-curve,obsoleteMarxismontheother.1.2.TheScholarlyConversation:OverviewSincethebeginning,Marxisttheoreticians,activists,writersandcommunicatorshavebeenandstillarepra
