5、hemanufactureofclear,tintedandcoatedglassforbuildings,andclearandtintedglassforvehicles.Pilkingtonhadbeenexperimentingwithimprovingthemeltingprocess,andin1952hehadtheideaofusingabedofmoltenmetaltoformtheflatglass,eliminatingaltogethertheneedforrollerswithinthefloatbath.Themetal

6、hadtomeltatatemperaturelessthanthehardeningpointofglass(about600°C),butcouldnotboilatatemperaturebelowthetemperatureofthemoltenglass(about1500°C).Thebestmetalforthejobwastin.Therestoftheconceptreliedongravity,whichguaranteedthatthesurfaceofthemoltenmetalwasperfectlyflatandhoriz
