2、tionsandsentimentshadbeenmoreexpressed.Amongthesepoets,oneoftherepresentativeswasThomasGray.Graywasanimportantpoetofneo-classicismandhespentmostofhislifeinCambridgeonstudyandwork.Hewassoselfcriticalandfearfuloffailurethatheonlypublished13poemsduringhislifetime.HismasterpiecewasTheElegyWritteninaCou

3、ntryChurchyard,whichcosthimeightyearstofinishandhasbeenrankedamongthebestofthe18thcenturyEnglishpoetry.Gray’sElegy,amodelofsentimentalistpoetry,isregardedasa“bestknownpoemintheEnglishlanguage”,apoemfullofthegentlemelancholywhichmarksallearlyRomanticpoetry.Withaclassicalprecisionandpolish,thepoemsho

4、wsakeeninterestintheEnglishcountrysideandasincerefeelingofthelifeofcommonpeople.Inthispoem,thepoetwanderedinthechurchyardandthoughtalotwhenhesawtheGravestonesoftheordinarypeople.Thesepeopleareunknowntopublicandtheyworkedforalltheirlivesbuttheywereburiedinsosimpleandcrudechurchyardaftertheirdeath.Th

5、eywereambitiousaswellassomegreatpeoplewhentheywereAlive.Thepoetexpressedhisgreatsympathytotheordinarypeopleandcriticizetheextravagantanddissipatedbigshots.Besides,heshowedthefactthatdeathwasinevitableandthateven“thepathsofgloryledbuttothegrave”.Thepoemcontains32quatrainsofiambicpentameter,witharhym

6、eschemeofababforeachstanza.Eachlinehasfivepairsofsyllablesforatotaloftensyllables.Ineachpair,thefirstsyllableisunstressedandthesecondisstressed.Wecanfinditinthefirsttwolinesofthepoem:“Thecurfewtollstheknellofpartingday,Thelowingherdwindsslowlyo'erthelea”.Besides,ineachstanza,thefirstlinerhymeswitht
