2、owergenerationandfloodcontrol.Theriver’sendlessfloodshavebroughtdestructionanddeathforcenturies—1milliondeathsinthe20thcenturyalone.Nowadays,alongtheYangtzeRiver,thethirdlongestriverintheworld,agreatconstructionproject,theThreeGorgesDamisinprogress.Oncecompleted,itwillbethelargestandmos

3、tpowerfulhydro-electricprojectintheworld.Towering610feethighandstretching1.3mileswide,thedamwillcreateareservoirthatextendsnearly400milesupstreamthuschangingthelandscapeofoneofthemostbeautifulregionsinChina.TheprojecthasbeenunderdiscussioninChinasincetheideaofadamwasfirstproposedin1919.

4、TheThreeGorgesDamisbothamarvelofengineeringandthegreatestchallengeitsdesignershaveeverfaced.TheThreeGorgesprojecthasbeenengineeredtostoreover5trilliongallons(加仑)ofwaterandtowithstandanearthquakeof7.0ontheRichterscale(里氏震级).Thereservoirwillallow10,000-tonshipstoenterthenation’sinterior,w

5、hichcurrentlylimitsaccesstoboatsunder1,500tons.Inaddition,thegovernmentsaysthedamwillcontrolterrifyingfloodsandprovideelectricalpowertoChina’sgrowingcities.LikeChina’sGreatWall,itwillbeoneofthefewman-madestructuresthatcanbeseenfromspace.TheChinesegovernmentandthedam’sengineersthinkofthe
