2、heMainPalaceinBerlin.In1716,FrederickWilliamI,sonandsuccessorofFrederickI,signedthePrussian-RussianAlliancewithCzarPeterI.Tocommemoratethisoccasion,FrederickpresentedtheczarwiththeAmberRoom.ItwastheninstalledintheoldWinterPalaceinSaintPetersburg,butin1755wasmovedtotheCatherinePalaceinZarskoj

3、eSelo(nowPushkin),DuringWorldWarII,theGermanadvanceonLeningradwassorapidthattheRussianshadnotimetoremoveorconcealtheAmberroom.AlthoughtheGermansneverreachedLeningrad,whoseinhabitantsdefendedthemselvesgallantly,theydidreachPushkinandtheretheyfoundtheambertreasures.Justasmanyfineworksofartwere

4、confiscatedbytheadvancingtroops,sowastheAmberRoomdestinedtochangehandsagain.Theentireroomwasdismantledandpackedincrates,andawaitedshipmenttoKönigsberg.ThecrateswereloadedaboardtheGermanshipWilhelmGustloff,whichlefttheLeningradharboratnight.ButbeforeitcouldreachGermanytheshipwastorpedoedandsu

5、nkbyaRussiansubmarine.ThustheAmberRoomsettledtothebottomoftheBalticSeainno-man's-land.Ofcourse,nothingcouldbedoneaboutituntilthewarhadended.Severalmonthslater,agroupofRussiandiversfoundthesunkenshipandlaunchedalargeunderwaterexpeditiontorecovertheAmberRoom.Whentheyfinallyenteredtheboat,theyd
