2、tionsandthevelocityofthetoolwithrespecttotheworkpiece.Basically,inmetalcutting,asharpenedwedge-shapedtoolremovesarathernarrowstripofmetalfromthesurfaceofaductileworkpieceintheformofaseverelydeformedchip.Thechipisawasteproductthatisconsiderablyshorterthantheworkpiecefromwhichitcamebut

3、withacorrespondingincreaseinthicknessoftheuncutchip.Thegeometricalshapeofworkpiecedependsontheshapeofthetoolanditspathduringthemachiningoperation.Mostmachiningoperationsproducepartsofdifferinggeometry.Ifaroughcylindricalworkpiecerevolvesaboutacentralaxisandthetoolpenetratesbeneathits

4、surfaceandtravelsparalleltothecenterofrotation,asurfaceofrevolutionisproduced,andtheoperationiscalledturning.Ifahollowtubeismachinedontheinsideinasimilarmanner,theoperationiscalledboring.Producinganexternalconicalsurfaceuniformlyvaryingdiameteriscalledtaperturning,ifthetoolpointtrave

5、lsinapathofvaryingradius,acontouredsurfacelikethatofabowlingpincanbeproduced;or,ifthepieceisshortenoughandthesupportissufficientlyrigid,acontouredsurfacecouldbeproducedbyfeedingashapedtoolnormaltotheaxisofrotation.Shorttaperedorcylindricalsurfacescouldalsobecontourformed.Flatorplanes

6、urfacesarefrequentlyrequired.Theycanbegeneratedbyradialturningorfacing,inwhichthetoolpointmovesnormaltotheaxisofrotation.Inothercases,itismoreconvenienttoholdtheworkpiecesteadyandreciprocatethetoolacrossitinaseriesofstraight-linecutswithacrosswisefeedincrementbeforeeachcuttingstroke.

7、Thisoperationiscalledplanningandiscarriedoutonashaper.Forlargerpiecesitiseasiertokeepthetoolstationaryanddrawtheworkpieceunderitasinplanning.Thetoolisfedateachreciprocation.Contouredsurfacescanbeproducedbyusingshapedtools.Multiple-edgedtoolscanalsobeused.Drillingusesatwin-edgedfluted
