3、forniain1966,heaskedifCalifornianswouldallow"agreatuniversitytobebroughttoitskneesbyanoisy,dissidentminority".Theliberalsrepliedthatitwastheabilitytotoleratenoisy,dissidentminoritieswhichmadeuniversitiesgreat.OnuniversitycampusesinEurope,masssocialistorcommunistmovementsgaverisetoincreasingly
4、violentclashesbetweentheestablishmentandthecollegestudents,withtheirnewandpassionatecommitmenttofreedomandjustice.MuchoftheprotestwasabouttheVietnamWar.ButinFrance,thestudentsoftheSorbonneinParismanagedtoformanalliancewiththetradeunionsandtolaunchageneralstrike,whichultimatelybroughtaboutther
5、esignationofPresidentdeGaulle.Itwasn'tjusttheactivismthatcharacterizedstudentlifeinthe1960s.Everywhere,goingtocollegemeantyourfirsttasteofrealfreedom,oflatenightsinthedormorintheJuniorCommonRoom,discussingthemeaningoflife.Youusedtohavetogotocollegetoreadyourfirstforbiddenbook,seeyourfirstindi
