2、orstudentsintheDepartmentofEngineeringScienceatTrinityUniversity.Theobjectiveoftheprojectwastodevelopatemperaturecontrolsystemforanair-filledchamber.Thesystemwastoallowentryofadesiredchambertemperatureinaprescribedrangeandtoexhibitovershootandsteady-statetemperatureerroroflessthan1degreeKel

3、vinintheactualchambertemperaturestepresponse.Thedetailsofthedesigndevelopedbythisgroupofstudents,basedonaMotorolaMC68HC05familymicrocontroller,aredescribed.Thepedagogicalvalueoftheproblemisalsodiscussedthroughadescriptionofsomeofthekeystepsinthedesignprocess.Itisshownthatthesolutionrequires

4、broadknowledgedrawnfromseveralengineeringdisciplinesincludingelectrical,mechanical,andcontrolsystemsengineering.1IntroductionThedesignprojectwhichisthesubjectofthispaperoriginatedfromareal-worldapplication.AprototypeofamicroscopeslidedryerhadbeendevelopedaroundanOmegaTMmodelCN-390temperatur

5、econtroller,andtheobjectivewastodevelopacustomtemperaturecontrolsystemtoreplacetheOmegasystem.Themotivationwasthatacustomcontrollertargetedspecificallyfortheapplicationshouldbeabletoachievethesamefunctionalityatamuchlowercost,astheOmegasystemisunnecessarilyversatileandequippedtohandleawidev

6、arietyofapplications.ThemechanicallayoutoftheslidedryerprototypeisshowninFigure1.Themainelementofthedryerisalarge,insulated,air-filledchamberinwhichmicroscopeslides,eachwithatissuesampleencasedinparaffin,canbesetoncaddies.Inorderthattheparaffinmaintaintheproperconsistency,thetemperatureinth

7、eslidechambermustbemaintainedatadesired(constant)temperature.Asecondchamber(theelectronicsenclosure)housesaresistiveheaterandthetemperaturecontroller,andafanmountedontheendofthedryerblowsairacrosstheheater,carryingheatintotheslidechamber.Thisdesignprojec
