4、et,andsoldbeerandspices.TheGermanbeerwasverygood,andthereweremanysorts—fromBremen,Prussia,andBrunswick—andquantitiesofallsortsofspices,saffron,aniseed,ginger,andespeciallypepper;indeed,pepperwasalmostthechiefarticlesoldhere;soithappenedatlastthattheGermanclerksinDenmarkgottheirnickna
5、meof“peppergentry.”Ithadbeenmadeaconditionwiththeseclerksthattheyshouldnotmarry;sothatthosewholivedtobeoldhadtotakecareofthemselves,toattendtotheirowncomforts,andeventolighttheirownfires,whentheyhadanytolight.Manyofthemwereveryaged;lonelyoldboys,withstrangethoughtsandeccentrichabits.
