4、r,hassurvivedtothisday:wehaveasmallnumberofcompletetextsbythetragediansAeschylus,SophoclesandEuripides,andthecomicwritersAristophanesand,fromthelate4thcentury,Menander.MasksInalargeopen-airtheatre,liketheTheatreofDionysusinAthens,theclassicalmaskswereabletocreateasenseofdreadinthe
5、audiencecreatinglargescalepanic,especiallysincetheyhadintenselyexaggeratedfacialfeaturesandexpressions.Theyenabledanactortoappearandreappearinseveraldifferentroles,thuspreventingtheaudiencefromidentifyingtheactortoonespecificcharacter.Theirvariationshelptheaudiencetodistinguishsex
