2、y,22October2004whenHerMajestyTheQueenvisitedthecampustopersonallypresenttheUniversity’snewRoyalChartertoCo-ChancellorAnnaFordataspecialceremonyheldintheWhitworthHall.Thenewinstitutionhasadistinguishedheritage.ItcantraceitsrootsbacktotheformationoftheManchesterMechanicsInstitutein1824,whichlaterb

3、ecameUMIST.TheVictoriaUniversityofManchesterwasfoundedasOwensCollegein1851andbecameEngland’sfirstcivicuniversityin1880.Thetwouniversitiesfirstbeganworkingtogetheralmost100yearsago.Theyweresituatedonneighbouringcampusesandthisenabledthemtodevelopanumberofjointcourses,departmentsandservices.Theyto

4、okthedecisiontomergein2003.ThecreationofTheUniversityofManchesterhasbeenhailedasoneoftheboldestandmostambitiousinitiativesinhighereducation.Thispioneeringspiritcarriesontoday,withtheaimtobecomeoneoftheworld’stop25universitiesby2015backedbyanongoing£650millioninvestmentprogrammeinstaffandfaciliti

5、es–thelargestsuchinvestmentprogrammeinBritishhighereducation.FromthePresidentandVice-ChancellorIwelcomeyouall–graduands,familymembersandfriends–toTheUniversityofManchesterforthisdegreecongregation.ThisisatimeofcelebrationforallofusandIverymuchhopethatyoufinditanenjoyableoccasion.Aseachgraduandis

6、presentedforconfermentoftheirdegree,theUniversityshareswithyouallagreatsenseofprideintheawardtheyhaveworkedsohardtoattain.Forthoseofyougraduatingtoday,theseceremoniesmarknottheendofyourrelationshipwiththeUniversitybutthestartofanewstage.ItismyhopethatthelinksbetweentheUniversityandyouwillgroweve
