2、eryimportantfortheFilipinos.ThiswassomethingthattheAmericansgaveimportanceto,ThespreadofdemocracyandformationofgoodcitizensincludingtherightsandresponsibilitiesofthepeoplewerethefocusofAmericaneducationinthecountry.EducationallowedtheAmericanstospreadorsharetheirculture,particularlytheEnglishlangu

3、age,totheFilipinos.TheAmericangovernmentwantedtogiveeveryonethechancetostudysotheybuiltpublicschoolsfortheFilipinos.VolunteerFilipinosoldiersbecamethefirstteachersoftheFilipinos.Partoftheirmissionwastobuildclassroomsineveryplacewheretheywereassigned.TheFilipinosoldiersstoppedteachingonlywhenagroup

4、ofteachersfromtheU.S.cametothePhilippinesinJune1901.Theycameaboardtheship"Sheridan."InAugust1901,600teacherscalled"Thomasites"arrived.Theirnamecamefromtheshiptheytraveledon,theS.S.Thomas.Thisgroupbecamesuccessfulintheirmission.Everychildfromage7wasrequiredtoregisterinschoolslocatedintheirowntownor

5、province.Thestudentsweregivenfreeschoolmaterials.TherewerethreelevelsofeducationduringtheAmericanperiod.The"elementary"levelconsistedoffourprimaryyearsand3intermediateyears.The"secondary"orhighschoollevelconsistedoffouryears;andthethirdwasthe"college"ortertiarylevel.Manyelementaryandsecondaryschoo

6、lswereopenedincitiesandprovinces.Normal,vocational,agricultural,andbusinessschoolswerealsoopened.TherewerealsocollegesduringtheAmericanperiod.Someofthesecollegesare:PhilippineNormalSchoolin1901(nowauniversity);NationalUniversity(1901);,UniversityofManila(1914);PhilippineWomenUniversity(1919);andFa

7、rEasternUniversity(1933).Examplesofvocationalschoolsare:thePhilippineNauticalSchool,PhilippineSchoolofArtsandTradesandtheCentralLuzonAgricultureSchool.TheUniversityofthePhilippineswasalsofoundedin1908.Religionwas
