2、rliamentafter1512,whichhadbeenmeetingtheresincethethirteenthcentury.ThePalaceisoneofthecentersofpoliticallifeintheUnitedKingdom;"Westminster"hasbecomeametonymfortheUKParliament,andtheWestminstersystemofgovernmenthastakenitsnameafterit.HISTORYThePalaceofWes
3、tminsterwasthemonarch'sprincipalresidenceinthelateMedievalperiod.ThepredecessorofParliament,theCuriaRegis(RoyalCouncil),metinWestminsterHall(althoughitfollowedtheKingwhenhemovedtootherpalaces).TheModelParliament,thefirstofficialParliamentofEngland,metinthe

6、yH.J.Brewer,1884AdetailfromJohnRocque's1746mapofLondon.——FireandReconstructionOn16 October1834,afirebrokeoutinthePalace.Inthecourseofreconstruction,theimmediateprioritywastoprovideaccommodationforthenextParliament,andsothePaintedChamberandWhiteChamberwereh
7、astilyrepairedfortemporaryusebytheHousesofLordsandCommonsrespectively.TheBurningoftheHousesofLordsandCommons(apainting)——RecentHistoryDuringWorldWarII,thepalacewasdamagedagain.FollowingthedestructionoftheCommonsChamber,theLordsofferedtheirowndebatingchambe
