2、intheEnglishVersionofWolfTotem.Ichoosethisasmytopicduetothefollowingreasons.Firstly,IamalwaysinterestedinthetranslationandspreadingofChinesecontemporaryliterature.Asyouallknow,althoughChineseculturehasgraduallyattractedtheworld’sattentionwithChina’srapiddevelopmentinrecen
3、tyears,thenumberofChinesebookstranslatedandintroducedtothewesternworldisstilllow.Generallyspeaking,Chinesecontemporaryliteratureisnotwellacceptedbywesternreaders.ButWolfTotemisanexception.ItwastranslatedbyHowardGoldbalttin2008andhasexhibitedgoodmarketperformance.Sobythist
4、hesis,IwanttofindthereasonsforwhythetranslationofWolfTotemhasbecomeasuccess,inanattempttosupplyananswertothetranslationandspreadingofChinesecontemporaryliteraturetothewesternworld.Secondly,sincethe“culturalturn”in1980s,theissueofthetranslator’ssubjectivityhasgraduallybeco
5、meahotresearchtopic.Scholarsbothathomeandabroadhavedemonstratedanobvioustendencytoenhancethetranslators’statusandhighlighttheirsubjectivity.Well,thisisawelcomechangeintranslationstudy.However,manyarefondofstressingtheimportanceofunbridledplayofthetranslator’ssubjectivity,
6、somuchsothattheypaylittleattentiontotherestrictivefactorswhichalwaysgreatlyinfluencetheexercisethetranslator’ssubjectivity.Thus,howtoappropriatelyexercisethetranslator’ssubjectivityremainstobeacontroversialissue.Soitisalsooneofmymajorconcernstofindaproperwaytojudgewhether
7、thetranslatorappropriatelyexerciseshissubjectivityornot.Thirdly,thetranslatorHowardGoldbalttholdsasetoftranslationthoughtsthatfittheverysubjectofthisthesis.Ontheonehand,hepaysduerespecttotheauthor,andtrytobefaithfultotheoriginaltext,andontheotherhand,heagreesthateverytran
