5、ting.Herein,wescreened12,000peopleinacommunitystrickenbySARS10monthspreviouslyandfound53individuals(0.44%)whohadimmunoglobulinGantibodiestotheSARScoronavirus(SARS-CoV)nucleocapsid(N)producedinbacteria.However,onlysevenofthese(group1)hadserawhichalsoreac
6、tedwiththenativeNantigenexpressedinSARS-CoV-infectedVerocells,N-transfected293Tcells,andtissuesofinfectedSARSpatients.Ofthese,sixindividualshadhadSARSpreviously.Theremainingperson,aswellasthe46otherindividuals(group2),werehealthyandhadnohistoryofSARS.Gr
7、oup1antibodiesrecognizedepitopeslocatedslightlydifferentlyinNfromthoseofgroup2antibodies,andamousehybridomaantibodyresemblingtheformertypewasgenerated.Unusually,group2antibodiesappearedtorecognizecross-reactivebacterialepitopesthatpresumablywereposttran
8、slationallymodifiedineukaryotesandhencewereprobablynotinducedbySARS-CoVorrelatedcoronavirusesbutratherbybacteria.TheNantigenisthushighlyunique.Theextremelylowrate(0.008%)ofasymptomaticSARSinfectionfoundatteststothehighvirulenceoft
