2、ACT®PowerspanhasbeendevelopingaCO2captureprocess,calledECO2,since2004in,conjunctionwiththeU.S.DOENationalEnergyTechnologyLaboratory(NETL)underacooperativeresearchanddevelopmentagreement.InDecember2007Powerspanannounceditexclusivelylicensedapatentforthe
3、processfromNETL.PowerspanhasconductedextensivelaboratorytestingtoestablishtheeffectivenessoftheprocessforCO2captureandhasinitiatedapilottestprogramwithFirstEnergyattheR.E.BurgerPlant.A1-MWpilotdemonstrationisscheduledtobeginin2008,whichwillproduce20ton
4、sofsequestration-ready®CO2perday.ThepilotwilldemonstrateCO2capturethroughintegrationwiththeECOmulti-pollutantcontrolprocess.Thepilotprogramwillalsopreparethetechnologyforcommercialscalecarboncaptureandsequestration(CCS)demonstrationprojectsINTRODUCTION
5、WhileCO2emissionsfrompowerplantsarecurrentlyunregulatedattheFederallevel,thereisagrowingconsensusthatstandardslimitingCO2emissionsarelikelytobepromulgatedwithinthenextfiveyears.CO2emissionsfromtheelectricpowersectoraccountfor40percentoftotalU.S.energy-
6、relatedCO2emissions.With50percentofU.S.electricitygeneratedfromcoalandmanynewcoal-firedelectricgeneratingplantsintheplanning,permitting,orconstructionstages,itisbecomingincreasinglyimportantthatCO2capturesolutionsaredevelopedwhicharesuitablefortheexist
7、ingfleetofcoal-burningpowerplants,aswellasforplanned,newcapacity.Today,limitedCO2capturetechnologiesarecommerciallyavailableforuseoncoal-firedpowerplants,andnonehasbeendeployedatthescaleofthetypicalbaseloadedplant.Inaddition,existingCO2capturesolutions
8、havecapitalandoperatingcoststhatareconsidereduneconomicalforconventionalcoal-firedpowerplants.®PowerspanCorp.isdevelopingaCO2captureprocess,calledECO2,thatcanbeappliedtobothexistingandnewcoal-firedpowerplants.Theprocessisbeingdesignedas
