3、u1dliketothanktheWashingtonUniversityfacultymemberswhoservedasourinstruetors,mentors,andfriends・AsIthinkbackontheseven-and-a-halfyearsIspentatWashingtonUniversity,mymindisfilledwithmemories,happy,sad,frustrating,andevenhumorous・TonightIwou1dliketosharewithyousomeofthememoriesthatItake
4、withmeasIleaveWashingtonUniversity.ItakewithmethememoryofmyofficeonthefourthfloorofLopataHall一theroomattheendofthehallwaythatwastoohotinsummer,toocoldinwinter,andalwaystoofarawayfromthewomen'srestToom.Thewindowwasmyoffice1sbestfeature.Wereitnotforthephysicsbuildingacrosstheway,itwould
5、haveaffordedmeaclearviewofthearch・ButinsteadIgotaviewoftheroofofthephysicsbuilding.IalsohadaviewofonecorneroftheroofofUrbauerHall,whichseemedtobeafavoriteperchforvariousspeciesofbirdswhoalternatelywonperchingrightsforseveralweeksatatime・AndIhadaniceviewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthy
6、asagoodplaceforwatchingpeopleruntheirdogs・It"samazinghowfascinatingtheseviewsbecamethelongerIworkedonmydissertation.Butmyfavoriteviewwasofanearbyoaktree・Frommyfourth-floorvantagepointIhadaratherintimateviewofthetreeandthevariousbirdsandsquirrelsthatinhabitit.Occasionallyabirdwouldland
