2、ss.AMT,initsvaiyingforms,hasbeencreditedwiththepotentialtobestow,amongotherthings,earlierentrancetomarket,fasterresponsestochangingcustomerneeds,increasedproductivity,andhigherqualityproductswithimprovedconsistencyandreliability.However,resultsofseveralempiricalstudiesindicatethatwhilemo
3、stfirmsachievesomebenefits,manyofthemarenotfullyexploitingtheirAMTstoutedcapabilities(Beatty,1990;BeaumontandSchroder,1997;Boeretal.,1990;deRon,1995;Gunasekaranetal.,1994;Inman,1991;Jaikumar,1986).SincethetechnicalcapabilitiesofAMTarewellproven,failuretoachievethepotentialbenefitshasofte
4、nbeenattributedtoinfrastracturalproblemssuchasinadequateorganizationalplanningandpreparationfortheadoptionoftheAMTorfaultyexecutionofotheraspectsoftheimplementationprocess(ChenandSmall,1994;Chung,1996;Frolich,1998;HayesandJaikumar,1991).AMTimplementationrequiresorganizationstomakeadaptat
5、ionsinthefollowingfourareas:processtechnology,humanresources,operationalstractures,andinformationsystems(Chung,1996;Frolich,1998;Leietal.,1996;Sabbaghi,1990;Siegeletal.,1997).Specifically,ithasbeenfoundthatamongtheseadaptations,informationsystemsadaptationmaybethemostimportantvariableine
6、xplainingoperationalperformance(Frolich,1998).Ithasalsobeenindicatedthatasanorganizationmovesalongthetechnologyscalefromstand-aloneAMTtowardsintegratedsystemssuchascomputer-integratedmanufacturing(CIM),theneedforhighqualityandtimelyproduction-relatedinformationwillalsoincrease(Brandyberr
7、yetal.,1999).Further,UptonandMcAfee(2000),indicatethatnon-stopfloorinformationtechnologyis,initself,animportantcategoiyofAMT.ThesefindingssuggestthatinformationisthekeythatisneededtounlocktheimprovementsincompetitivenesspromisedbyAMT.Ifthisisindeedthecase,thereshouldbeake
