4、etyAsindustrialdevelopmentgrowsinboththeurbanandruralcentersofChinaandwatertreatmentfacilitiescontinuetobeindearth,surfaceandgroundwaterpollutionisbecomingincreasinglysevere.NearlyeverymajorriverinChinasuffersfrompollution.InasurveyofsevenofChina'smajorriverbasinsandi10des

5、ignatedkeysectionsoftheserivers,only32percentofriverwaterwasfoundtomeetthenationalstandardsfordrinkingwatersources(classifiedasClass1andClassII).Majorpollutantsincludedammoniaoxideandtoxicandorganicchemicals.Currently,24percentoftheChinesepopulationissaidtobedrinkingverypo

6、llutedwaterand79percentisdrinkingsomewhatpollutedwater.Thedrinkingwaterofnearlyallcitieslocatedinariver'sdownstreamalsocontaincolonbacillus,abacteriaharmfultothehumandigestivesystem.AndtheuntreatedwastewaterdischargeddirectlyintotheHuaiheRiverisprimarilyfromthesurroundings

7、mall-scaleTVEssuchaspapermills,breweries,chemicalplantsandtannerieswhichstillrelyonoutdated,environmentallyunfriendlyproductiontechnology.12.1percentofTVEwastewaterdischargeand16.4percentoftheTVE-inducedchemicaloxygendemandisinthisBasin.Anotherrelativelyrecentcauseofcoasta
