2、O:1.07iiINTRODUCTIONTheStructuredInterviewofPersonalityOrganization(STIPO)providesaguidetotheevaluationoftheindividual’spersonalityorganizationaccordingtothepsychodynamicconceptualizationofKernberg(1996).TheprecursortotheSTIPOisthestructuralinterview(Kernberg,1981;Clark
3、in,Kernberg&Somavia,1998),whichisaclinicalassessmentwithinternalguidelinesorganizedtoevaluatepersonalityorganization.Theadvantageoftheclinicalstructuralinterviewisthatitallowsasophisticatedcliniciantoutilizeaccumulatedclinicalwisdomandintuitiontotaketheinterviewintotarg
4、etedareas.Itsdisadvantageislimitedreliabilityacrossinterviewersandunevencoverageofallareasofinquiry.TheadvantageoftheSTIPOisthatitprovidesaframeworkwithinwhichtheinterviewercanarriveatareliableassessmentofpsychicstructureandstructuralchange.Wearenotthefirsttooperational
5、izeandstandardizeastructuraldiagnosisfromapsychodynamicpointofview.Sullivanwroteaboutthepsychiatricinterviewin1953/54.Thiswasfollowedby“Theinitialinterviewinpsychiatricpractice”(Gill,Newman,Redlich,1954),andthe"Tavistock"interview(Balint&Balint,1961).Otherattemptsfollow
6、ed,including“Thepsychoanalyticinitialinterview”(Argelander,1966),“Thebiographicalcasehistoryofdepthpsychology”(Duhrssen,1972),“Thepsychiatricexamination”(Kind,1973).Mostrecently,Weinryb(1991)constructedthe“KAPP”interviewtostandardizethestructuralinterviewofKernberg.TheS
7、TIPOisasemi-structuredinterviewthatyieldsadimensionalassessmentofthedomainsoffunctioningcentraltoKernberg’stheoryofpersonalityorganization:identityconsolidation;qualityofobjectrelations;useofprimitivedefenses;qualityofaggression;adaptivecopingversuscharacterrigidity;and
