2、iculttodissipateheatandfragile.ThemicrofabricatedladdertypeTWTpresentsanidealsolutionduetothefactthatitisasymmetricdevicerequiringfewerpiecesandsimplerassemblysoitcaneasilybefabricatedatlowcost.However,importantfeaturesofaTHzdevicesuchasthis,likenonlineargainandbandwidth,arenotwe

3、llunderstood.SolutionVORPALwasusedbyresearchersattheUniversityofColoradoatColoradoSprings(UCCS)toreliablypredictthebeamopticsbehaviorofamicrofabricatedladdertypeTWTforthefirsttime.Theyextendedthefrequencyrangeuptonear50GHzwheretheconventionaltypeTWTcannolongerbemanufactured.Using

4、VORPAL,theyfoundtheoptimallengthoftheladderaswellastheoptimalpower.The3DVORPALresultswillbeusedtodesignthenewladdertypeTWTatUCCS.WhyVORPAL?ThemicrofabricatedladderTWTisinintricatedevicerequiringmanydifferentphysicsmodelsincludingparticleswhichmoststandardelectromagneticmodelsdon'

5、tinclude.VORPALalsohasaDey-Mittracut-cellalgorithminordertomodelcomplexgeometriesinanonstair-steppedmannerleadingtosmoothsurfacesoverwhichtosolveMaxwell'sequations.Thecomplexityinthephysicsmodeledandthegeometryofthedesignrequired3Dsimulationsutilizingthedistributedparallelcomputi
