3、culartopichavebeenconducted,therearestudiesshowingthatgivinggiftstoothersoffersalonger-lastingboosttoone’shappinessthanbuyingthesamegiftforoneself.Thisseemstoconfirmthatpeoplecangetmoreoutofexperiencesthantheycangetoutofowningthings.Ifweapplythesamelogictospendingmoneyononeself,the
4、nitwouldbereasonabletoassumethatonecouldgetmoreoveralljoyfrom,say,takingatriptoPeruthanfrombuyinganexpensivepairofearrings.Secondofall,becausethepleasurewegetfrombuyingobjectslastsforsuchashorttime,preferentiallyspendingmoneyon“long-lastingthings”cancultivatematerialismandcompulsiv
5、espending.Wewillchasethesatisfactionofbuyingthingsmuchlikeanaddictchasesahigh.Wewillalsostarttomeasureourhappinessandourworthbythequantityofourpossessions.Thisissurelyanunhealthywaytolive,notonlybecauseofhowshallowitis,butalsobecauseofhowunsustainableitis.Studieshaveshownthatmateri
6、alwealthisonlylooselycorrelatedwithself-reportedfeelingsoffulfillment;afterone’sbasicneedsaremet,thehappinessonegetsfrombuyingthingsshowsseverelydiminishingreturns.Thus,weshouldavoidplacingtoomuchvalueonobjectsandlearntocherishexperiencesinstead.Granted,incertainsituations,buyingob
7、jectscanhaveadeepandlastingimpactonaperson.Specifically,ittendstohappenwhenpeoplebuymeaningfulthingsforothers.Forexample,afriendonceboughtmearingthatIhadhadmyeyeonforalongtimebutcouldnotafford.Theringitselfdidmakemeveryhappy,butIwasevenhappiertohavereceivedsuchathoughtfulgiftfrommy
