2、ndinventoryandpayrollforalmostofallcompanies.Westudyseveralnewapplications,whichhavebecomeincreasinglyimportantinrecentyears.First.Decision-supportsystemAstheonlineavailabilityofdatahasgrown,businesseshavebeguntoexploittheavailabledatatomakebetterdecisionsaboutincreasesales.Wecanextra

3、ctmuchinformationfordecisionsupportbyusingsimpleSQLqueries.Recentlyhowever,peoplehavefelttheneedforbetterdecisionsupportbasedondataanalysisanddatamining,orknowledgediscovery,usingdatafromavarietyofsources.Databaseapplicationscanbebroadlyclassifiedintotransactionprocessinganddecisionsu

4、pport.Transaction-processingsystemsarewidelyusedtoday,andcompanieshaveaccumulatedavastamountofinformationgeneratedbythesesystems.Thetermdataminingreferslooselytofindingrelevantinformation,or“discoveringknowledge,”fromalargevolumeofdata.Likeknowledgediscoveryinartificialintelligence,da

5、taminingattemptstodiscoverstatisticalrulesandpatternsautomaticallyfromdata.However,dataminingdiffersfrommachinelearninginthatitdealswithlargevolumesofdata,storedprimarilyondisk.Knowledgediscoveredfromadatabasecanberepresentedbyasetofrules.Wecandiscoverrulesfromdatabaseusingoneoftwomod

6、els:Inthefirstmodel,theuserisinvolveddirectlyintheprocessofknowledgediscovery.Inthesecondmodel,thesystemisresponsibleforautomaticallydiscoveringknowledgefromthedatabase,bydetectingpatternsandcorrelationsinthedata.Workonautomaticdiscoveryofruleshasbeeninfluencedstronglybyworkintheartif
