2、nonehundredpeoplesailedacrosstheAtlanticOceantosettleintheNewWorld（新大陆）.ThisreligiousgrouphadbeguntoquestionthebeliefsoftheChurchofEnglandandtheywantedtoseparatefromit.ThePilgrimssettledinwhatisnowthestateofMassachusetts.TheirfirstwinterintheNewWorldwasdifficult
3、.Theyhadarrivedtoolatetogrowmanycrops,andwithoutfreshfood,halfthecolonydiedfromdisease.ThefollowingspringtheIroquoisIndians（美国纽约州东北部易洛魁族印第安人）taughtthemhowtogrowcorn,anewfoodforthecolonists.Theyshowedthemothercropstogrowintheunfamiliarsoilandhowtohuntandfish.Inth
4、eautumnof1621,bountifulcropsofcorn,barley（大麦）,beansandpumpkinswereharvested.Thecolonistshadmuchtobethankfulfor,soafeastwasplanned.TheyinvitedthelocalIndianchiefand90Indians.TheIndiansbroughtdeertoroastwiththeturkeysandotherwildgameofferedbythecolonists.Thecoloni
5、stshadlearnedhowtocookcranberriesanddifferentkindsofcornandsquashdishesfromtheIndians.TothisfirstThanksgiving,theIndianshadevenbroughtpopcorn.Infollowingyears,manyoftheoriginalcolonistscelebratedtheautumnharvestwithafeastofthanks.AftertheUnitedStatesbecameaninde
6、pendentcountry,Congressrecommendedoneyearlydayofthanksgivingforthewholenationtocelebrate.GeorgeWashingtonsuggestedthedateNovember26asThanksgivingDay.Thenin1863,attheendofalongandbloodycivilwar,AbrahamLincolnaskedallAmericanstosetasidethelastThursdayinNovemberasa
7、dayofthanksgiving.ThanksgivingfallsonthefourthThursdayofNovember,adifferentdateeveryyear.ThePresidentmustproclaimthatdateastheofficialcelebration.Thanksgivingisatimefortraditionandsharing.Eveniftheylivefaraway,familymembersgatherforareunionatthehouseofanolderrel
