2、ndislargelyunknowninChinatoday,exceptamongasmallbutvocalgroupofpeopleadvocatingtherevivalofHanfuasaChinesenationalcostume.HistoryofHanfuAccordingtoChinesetradition,HanfucanbekeithtracedbacktotheYellowEmperor,agreatsagekingofancientChinawhomlegendsaysruledinthe27thcenturyBC.Hanfuitselfhasarecor

3、dedhistoryofmorethan3000years.ItwaswornbyHanChinesepeoplefromthesemi-legendaryXiaDynasty(c.21stcenturyBC-16thcenturyBC)allthewaytotheMingDynasty(1368-1644).ThetraditionaldressofmanyAsiancountrieshavebeeninfluencedbyHanfu,especiallythoseofJapanandKorea.HanfuwasregardedbyHanChineseasaveryimporta

4、ntpartoftheirculture.ThewearingofappropriatestylesofHanfuwasanimportantpartofcourteousrefinedbehaviour.ConfuciusconsideredHanfuaveryimportantpartofChineseceremonyandritualandmanyofhisquotationscontainreferencestoHanfu.ThedisappearanceofHanfuHanfudisappearedatthebeginningoftheQingDynasty(1644-1

5、911).TheQingDynastywasfoundednotbyHanChinesewhoformtheoverwhelmingmajorityofthepopulationofChinaproper,butbytheManchus.TakingadvantageofthepoliticalinstabilityandfrequentpopularrebellionsconvulsingChina,thehighlyorganizedmilitaryforcesoftheManchussweptintotheMingcapitalofBeijingin1644(whichits

6、elfhadearlierfallentorebelforcesunderLiZicheng),andformedtheQingDynasty.TheManchusforesawthattheywouldhavegreatdifficultyrulingtheHanChinese,whooutnumberedthemvastlyandhadamoresophisticatedculture.SoonafterthetakeoverofChinaproper,theManchusforcedtheHanChinesementoadoptManchuhairstyle(thebraid
