4、stcases,slavesfaceddailyabusefromtheirowners.MostNorthernerstriedtoabidebytherulethat“Allmenarecreatedequal.”ThesereasonslargelyaccountfortheAmericanCivilWar.TheCivilWarwasalong,brutalwarwithaveryhighcasualtyrate.ManyyoungmenfromboththeNorthandtheSouthwerekilledonthebattlefield;thed

6、ontheirownaccord.ButLincolnisprobablymostoftenassociatedwithhisleadershipofthecountryduringthisdifficultperiod.Hewasafirmbelieverthatslaverywaswrongandhefoughthardtostopit.In1863,LincolnsignedtheEmancipationProclamationwhichlegallygrantedfreedomtoallslaveslivinginAmerica.Butin1865,L

7、incoln’slifecametoanabruptendedwhilehewaswatchingaplayatFord’sTheaterinWashingtonD.C.Hisdeathwasnotanaccident;hewasassassinatedbyamannamedJohnWilkesBooth.NotlongafterLincoln’sdeath,theNorthdefeatedtheSouthandtheCivilWarwasended.TheSouthwasnolongerthoughtofasanothercountry,butpartofA
