7、xtbookshavedoubledthenumberofreferencestoterritorialspats;13ofthemstatethatSouthKoreais“illegallyoccupying”Dokdo,upfromfourin2011.SomehistorytextbooksalsodiluteorexpungereferencestoJapanesewarcrimes,forinstancebyswappingouttheword“massacre”inreferencetothe
8、atrocitiescommittedinNanjingin1937,infavourof“incident”.OneofthepublisherswaspersuadedtodeletephotographsandtestimonyofAsianwomenwhowerecorralledintobrothelsrunbytheJapanesearmy.Therevisedtextbooksaysthegovernmentfoundnoevidencetoprovethatthesocalled“comfo
9、rtwomen”hadbeentakentherebyforce.Thetextbookchangesreflectnewteachingguidelinessetbytheeducationministrylastyear:theseallowforbookstobedisqualifiediftheydeviatetoofarfromthegovernment’sofficialposition,orfromthegoalsoutlinedinbasiceducationpolicy.Thatpolic
