2、inderofmydaughterbringsmetothebeginningofmystory.1996,whenIgavemyfirstTEDTALK,Rebeccawasfiveyearsoldandshewassittingrightthereinthefrontrow.IhavejustwrittenabookthatcelebratedourlifeontheinternetandIwasabouttobeonthecoverofWiremagazine.Inthoseheadydays,wewereexperimentingwithchatroo
3、msandonlinevirtualcommunities.Wewereexploringdifferentaspectsofourselves.Wewereexploringdifferentaspectsofourselves.Andthenweunplugged.Iwasexcited.Andasapsychologist,whatexcitedmemostwastheideathatwewouldusewhatwelearnedinthevirtualworldaboutourselves,aboutouridentity,tolivebetterli
4、vesintherealworld.Nowfast-forwardto2012.I’mbackhereontheTEDstageagain.Mydaughter’s20.She’sacollegestudent.Shesleepswithhercellphone,sodoI.AndI’vejustwrittenanewbook,butthistimeit’snotonethatwillgetmeonthecoverofWiredmagazine.Sowhathappened?I’mstillexcitedbytechnology,butIbelieve,and
5、I’mheretomakethecase,thatwe’relettingittakeusplacesthatwedon’twanttogo.Overthepast15years,I’vestudiedtechnologiesofmobilecommunicationandI’veinterviewedhundredsandhundredsofpeople,youngandold,abouttheirpluggedinlives.AndwhatIhavefoundisthatourlittledevices,thoselittledevicesinourpoc
6、kets,aresopsychologicallypowerfulthattheydon’tonlychangewhatwedo,theychangewhoweare.Someofthethingswedonowwithourdevicesarethingsthat,onlyafewyearsago,wewouldhavefoundaddordisturbing,butthey’vequicklycometoseemfamiliar,justhowwedothings.Sojusttotakesomequickexamples:peopletextordoem
