2、estreamwrigglesoutofthepassandflowsdownsouth.ItpassesthentothewestofZhoukoudianandfinallydrainsintoLiuliheabout10kmsouthofthevillage.ThePekingManSiteisjustonthewestsideofZhoukoudianVillage.TheexposureofsedimentarystrataaroundZhoukoudianisquiteextraordinary,especiallythoseofthePliocen
3、eandPleistocene,andthereforeattractgeologiststovisitthearea.Ontheotherhand,theareaalsobearsrichOrdovicianlimestonewithwhichthelocalhabitantsmakelime.Itisbyquarryingthelimestonethatlocalhabitantsfind,insomefissures,theso-calledDragonBones,whichscientistscallfossils.Withintheresearchfr
4、ameworkofthelaboratory,FatherTeilharddeChardin,aneminentFrenchpaleontologist,andC.C.YoungstudiedthefossiliferousdepositsatZhoukoudiananddividedtheminto10layersin1929.Andthemostimportantdiscoveryofallwasmadeonthe2ndofDecemberin1929.Itwasinabranchingcavewhereafissurecrossesthemaincavet
5、hatPeifoundthefirstandalmostcompleteskullcapofPekingmanintheredsandyclay,whichisequivalenttothe10thlayerinthemainsection.Thediscoveryattractedgreatattentionfromscientificcircles.Thetwohuman-liketeethfoundbeforewerenotenoughtoconvinceeveryonethattheybelongtoPekingMan,buttheskullcapgav
6、emoreanatomicalproofandwasmuchmoreconvincing.AnimportantPaleolithicsite,thissitewasfirstexcavatedin1927,inacaveonDragonBoneHillatZhoukoudian,southwestofBeijing.In1929,skullfossilsofPekingmanwerediscoveredhere,providingconcreteevidencefortheexistenceofprimitivemanintheBeijingareaandma
7、rkingamile-stoneinthehistoryofpaleo-anthropology.Sofar,atotalof6skulls,15piecesoflowerjaw-bones,157teethandnumerousotherbonesegmentsfromthebodiesofabout40humanshavebeenexcavated,providingconcretedataforthestudyoftheevolutionofpre-historicbiologyandthedevelopmentofpre-historicculture.
