2、oliticsaremattersofrealconcerntotheinmates,asaffectingtheirpresentandperhapstheirfutureexistences.Nordoesthisindicateanylossofproportion.Noonepretendsthatcampmattersareofanybutlocalimportanceorofmorethantransientinterest,buttheirimportancethereisgreat.Theybulklargeinaworldofnarrowhorizonsan
3、ditissuggestedthatanydistortionofvaluesliesratherintheminimizationthanintheexaggerationoftheirimportance.Humanaffairsareessentiallypracticalmattersandthemeasureofimmediateeffectonthelivesofthosedirectlyconcernedinthemistoalargeextentthecriterionoftheirimportanceatthattimeandplace.Aprisonerc
4、anholdstrongviewsonsuchsubjectsaswhetherornotalltinnedmeatsshallbeissuedtoindividualscoldorbecentrallycooked,withoutlosingsightofthesignificanceoftheAtlanticCharter.Oneaspectofsocialorganizationistobefoundineconomicactivityandthis,alongwithothermanifestationsofagroupexistence,istobefoundina
5、nyP.O.W.camp.True,aprisonerisnotdependentonhisexertionsfortheprovisionofthenecessaries,oreventheluxuriesoflife,butthroughhiseconomicactivity,theexchangeofgoodsandservices,hisstandardofmaterialcomfortisconsiderablyenhanced.Andthisisaseriousmattertotheprisoner:heisnot"playingatshops"eventhoug
6、hthesmallscaleofthetransactionsandthesimpleexpressionofcomfortandwantsintermsofcigarettesandjam,razorbladesandwritingpaper,maketheurgencyofthoseneedsdifficulttoappreciate,evenbyanex-prisonerofsomethreemonths'standing.Nevertheless,itcannotbetoostronglyemphasizedthateconomicactivitiesdonotbul
