3、nparticularcanbenefitgreatlyfromhardwareacceleration.Thisapplicationdomainismarkedbycomputationallyintensivealgorithmsrequiringtherapidprocessingoflargeamountsofdata.Todate,reconfigurablehardwarehasnotbeenappliedtotheimportantareaofimagereconstruction.Foreffic
4、ientimplementationandmaximumspeedup,fixed-pointimplementationsarerequired.Theassociatedquantizationerrorsmustbecarefullybalancedagainsttherequirementsofthemedicalcommunity.Specifically,caremustbetakensothatverylittleerrorisintroducedcomparedtofloating-pointimp
5、lementationsandthevisualqualityoftheimagesisnotcompromised.Inthispaper,wepresentanFPGAimplementationoftheparallel-beambackprojectionalgorithmusedinCTforwhichalloftheserequirementsaremet.Weexploreanumberofquantizationissuesarisinginbackprojectionandconcentra
6、teonminimizingerrorwhilemaximizingefficiency.Ourimplementationshowsapproximately100timesspeedupoversoftwareversionsofthesamealgorithmrunningona1GHzPentium,andismoreflexiblethananASICimplementation.OurFPGAimplementationcaneasilybeadaptedtobothmedicalsensorswit
