10、riodthattheearliestwrittenreferencestosoushantu,aswellastocourtpatronageofsuchpaintings,appeared.AlthoughErlangwaslaterpromotedbytheSongcourtasapowerfulguardianofthestate,hecertainlycouldnothavebeenthesubjectoftheseearlysoushantu.;Literary,aswellasearlypictorial,evidenc
11、epointtoagradualprocessthroughwhichthecoreartisticrepertoireofsoushantuscenesdeveloped.TheysuggestthatBishamen
