4、ainstthesystem.Slaveswereoftenbeatenorevenkilledbytheirowners.AftertheCivilWar,onefreeslavereportedthathisownerkilledanolderslavewhowasteachinghimtoread.Intheoryanownerwhotreatedaslavebadlycouldbepunished.Inpractice,however,thelawmeantnothing.Oppositiontoslaverybeganveryearlyinthehistoryofth

5、eUS—in1671—butlittleprogresswasmadeuntilthebeginningofthenineteenthcentury.By1804slaverywasillegalinthenorthernstates.Butitcontinued,andevengrew,inthesouthernstates,whichdependedoncottonfortheireconomicwealth.SlaveryendedintheSouthonlyaftertheCivilWar.Forblacks,however,theendofslaverywasonly
