4、softheinternalnozzleexitflowinordertoidentifytheoriginofstringligaments/dropletsformationatthenozzleexit.Theimagesoftheflowaroundthenozzleseatareashowedclearlythatairwasentrainedfromoutsideintothenozzleseatareaundercertainflowoperatingconditions(lowcavitationnumber,CN);theformedairpocketsi
5、nsidetheannularnozzleprovedtobethemaincauseofthebreakingofthefuelliquidfilmintostringsasitemergedfromthenozzlewithastructureconsistingofalternatingthinandthickliquidfilaments.Astheflowrateincreased,theairpocketsweresuppressed,reducedinsizeandpushedtowardstheexitofthenozzleresultinginasmoot
6、herspray.Theresultsshowedthatthenumberofstringsincreasedlinearly,withinthemeasuredrange,withliquidexitvelocityandthatthesprayconeanglewassmallerorlargerthanthenominalvaluedependingontheattachmentofairpocketstothecartridgeorneedlesurfaces,respectively;thesetwodistinctsmallandlargeconeangles
7、werefoundtobedominantatlowandhighlifts.IncreasingtheflowratefurthersothatCNexceedsthecriticalvalue,gaverisetopocketsofvapourthatstartedtoemergeinthenozzleseatregionanddisintegratedrapidlyastheywereconvectedtowardsthenozzleexit.Theanalysisofthenearnozzleflowvis
