3、inimmigrationandbirthratespersist,theHispanicpopulationwillhavefurtherincreasedanestimated21%,theAsianpresenceabout22%,blacksalmost12%andwhitesalittlemorethan2%whenthe20thcenturyends.By2020,adatenofurtherintothefuturethanJohnF.Kennedy'selectionisinthepast,thenumberofU.S.residents
4、whoareHispanicornonwhitewillhavemorethandoubled,tonearly115million,whilethewhitepopulationwillnotbeincreasingatall.By2056,whensomeoneborntodaywillbe66yearsold,the"average"U.S.resident,asdefinedbyCensusstatistics,willtracehisorherdescenttoAfrica,Asia,theHispanicworld,thePacificIsl
5、ands,Arabia--almostanywherebutwhiteEurope.Amongtheyoungerpopulationsthatgotoschoolandprovidenewentrantstotheworkforce,thechangewillhappensooner.InsomeplacesanAmericabeyondthemeltingpothasalreadyarrived.InNewYorkStatesome40%ofelementary-andsecondary-schoolchildrenbelongtoanethnicm
6、inority.Withinadecade,theproportionisexpectedtoapproach50%.InCaliforniawhitepupilsarealreadyaminority.Hispanics(who,regardlessoftheircomplexion,generallydistinguishthemselvesfrombothblacksandwhites)accountfor31.4%ofpublicschoolenrollment,blacksadd8.9%,andAsiansandothersamountto11
7、%--foranonwhitetotalof51.3%.Thisfindingisnotonlyareflectionofwhiteflightfromdesegregatedpublicschools.Whitesofall+agesaccountforjust58%ofCalifornia'spopulation.InSanJosebearersoftheVietnamesesurnameNguyenoutnumbertheJonesesinthetelephonedirectory14columnstoeight.Noristhechangecon
