2、Burda12*AbstractIntroduction:SeveralmammalianspeciesspontaneouslyaligntheirbodyaxiswithrespecttotheEarth§magneticfield(MF)linesindiversebehavioralcontexts.Magneticalignmentisasuitableparadigmtoscanfortheoccurrenceofmagnetosensitivityacrossanimaltaxawi
3、ththeheuristicpotentialtocontributetotheunderstandingofthemechanismofmagnetoreceptionandidentifyfurtherfunctionsofmagnetosensationapartfromnavigation.Withthisinmindwesearchedforsignsofmagneticalignmentindogs・Wemeasuredthedirectionofthebodyaxisin70dogs
4、of37breedsduringdefecation(1,893observations)andurination(5,582observations)overatwo-yearperiod・Aftercompletesampling,wesortedthedataaccordingtothegeomagneticconditionsprevailingduringtherespectivesamplingperiods.Relativedeclinationandintensitychanges
5、oftheMFduringtherespectivedogwalkswerecalculatedfromdailymagnetograms.DirectionalpreferencesofdogsunderdifferentMFconditionswereanalyzedandtestedbymeansofcircularstatistics・Results:DogspreferredtoexcretewiththebodybeingalignedalongtheNorth-Southaxisun
6、dercalmMFconditions・ThisdirectionalbehaviorwasabolishedunderunstableMF.Thebestpredictorofthebehavioralswitchwastherateofchangeindeclination,i.e.,polarorientationoftheMF.Conclusions:Itisforthefirsttimethat(a)magneticsensitivitywasprovedindogs,(b)ameasu
7、rable,predictablebehavioralreactionuponnaturalMFfluctuationscouldbeunambiguouslyproveninamammal,and(c)highsensitivitytosmallchangesinpolarity,ratherthaninintensity,ofMFwasidentifiedasbiologicallymeaningful.Ourfindingsopennewhorizonsinmagnetoreceptionr
8、esearch.SincetheMFiscalminonlyabout20%ofthedaylightperiod,ourfindingsmightprovideanexplanationwhymanymagnetoreceptionexperimentswerehardlyreplicableandwhydirectionalvaluesofrecordsindiverseobservationsarefrequentlycompromisedbyscatter.Keywords
