2、gthistimemanyoftheEngland'spoorworkedasservantsforthewealthy.Asmostjobswerelocatedfarfromtheirhomes,theservantswouldliveatthehousesoftheiremployers.OnMotheringSundaytheservantswouldhavethedayoffandwereencouragedtoreturnhomeandspendthedaywiththeirmothers.Aspecialcake,calledthemotheringcake,wasoften
3、broughtalongtoprovideafestivetouch.AsChristianityspreadthroughoutEuropethecelebrationchangedtohonorthe"MotherChurch"--thespiritualpowerthatgavethemlifeandprotectedthemfromharm.OvertimethechurchfestivalblendedwiththeMotheringSundaycelebration.Peoplebeganhonoringtheirmothersaswellasthechurch.IntheUn
4、itedStatesMother'sDaywasfirstsuggestedin1872byJuliaWardHoweasadaydedicatedtopeace.In1907AnaJarvis,fromPhiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Ms.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginiatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay
5、.BythenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.ThehistoryOfMothers’DayMs.Jarvisandhersupportersbegantowritetoministers,businessman,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Itwassuccessful,by1911Mother'sDaywascelebratedinalmosteverystate.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,made
