2、ower,a180-tonship,setsailfrom Southampton, England.Her103passengers,thelegendarypilgrims（英国清教徒）,crossedtheAtlanticthroughthetumultuous(动荡的)waters.Thisreligious（宗教的）grouphadbeguntoquestionthebeliefsoftheChurchofEnglandandtheywantedtoseparate（分离）fromit. Afteraseajourn
3、eyof66days,thepilgrimsreachedPlymouthdockbyaccidentonDecember11th1620.Theiroriginaldestination（终点）wassomewhereinthenorthernpartofVirginiawhereotherpilgrimshadbeguncolonies（开拓殖民地）,buttheycouldnotreachtheplaceowingtowindsblowingthemoffcourse.TheirfirstwinterintheNewWo
4、rldwasdifficult.Theyhadarrivedtoolatetogrowmanycrops,andwithoutfreshfood,nearlyhalfthecolony(侨民)diedfromdiseaseandextremecold.Thefollowingspring theIndianstaughtthemhowtogrowcornandothercrops,andshowedthemhowtohuntandfish,whichhelpedthemsurvive（存活）.Intheautumnof1621
5、,bountifulcropsofcorn,barley,beansandpumpkinswereharvested.Thecolonistshadmuchtobethankfulfor,soafeastwasplanned.TheyinvitedthelocalIndianchiefand90Indians.Thisdinnerispopularlyknownas“Thefirstthanksgivingfeast”.Infollowingyears,manyoftheoriginalcolonistscelebratedt
6、heautumnharvestwithafeastofthanks.AftertheUnitedStatesbecameanindependentcountry,GeorgeWashingtonannouncedthefirstnationalThanksgivingDayin1789.Hemadeitclearthatthedayshouldbeadayofpublicthanksgivingandprayer.Thenin1863,PresidentAbrahamLincolnmadehisThanksgivingDayP
