2、cationsandidealisations.Theseassumptionscan,insomecases,haveadvertimplicationsontheexpectedseismicperformanceandhenceontherationaleandreliabil-ityofthedesignapproaches.Itisthereforeimperativethatdesignconceptsandapplicationrulesareconstantlyappraisedandrevisedinlight

3、ofrecentresearchfindingsandimprovedunderstandingofseismicbehaviour.Tothisend,thispaperfocusesonassessingtheunder-lyingapproachesandmainproceduresadoptedintheseismicdesignofsteelframes,withemphasisonEuropeandesignprovisions.Inaccordancewithcurrentseismicdesignpractice,

4、whichinEuropeisrepresentedbyEurocode8(EC8)(2004),structuresmaybedesignedaccordingtoeithernon-dissipativeordissipativebehaviour.Theformer,throughwhichthestructureisdimensionedtorespondlargelyintheelasticrange,isnormallylimitedtoareasoflowseismicityortostructuresofspec

5、ialuseandimportance.Otherwise,codesaimtoachieveeconomicaldesignbyemploy-ingdissipativebehaviourinwhichconsiderableinelasticdeformationscanbeaccommodatedundersignificantseismicevents.Inthecaseofirregularorcomplexstructures,detailednon-lineardynamicanalysismaybenecessa

6、ry.However,dissipativedesignofregularstructuresisusuallyperformedbyassigningastructuralbehaviourfactor(i.e.forcereductionormodifica-tionfactor)whichisusedtoreducethecode-specifiedforcesresultingfromidealisedelasticresponsespectra.Thisiscarriedoutinconjunctionwiththecap

7、acitydesignconceptwhichrequiresanappropriatedeterminationofthecapacityofthestructurebasedonapre-definedplasticmechanism(oftenreferredtoasfailuremode),coupledwiththeprovisionofsufficientductilityinplasticzonesandadequateover-strengthfactorsforotherregions.Althoughthefun
