2、imeandspaceis.Intheglobalvillage,nationsarelikefamiliesandcountriesarelikeneighborhoods.Timeandspacenolongerisolateorprotectnationsandgroupsfromeachother.Itnaturallyfollowsthatinterculturalcontacthasbecomemorefrequent,directand,therefore,moresignificantthaneverbefore.Whenpeopleofdifferentcultu
3、ralbackgroundscommunicatewitheachother,misunderstandingsaswellasconflictscomeup.Chinahasbecomeanactivememberoftheworldcommunity,andherentryintotheWTO,isboundtobringusintomorecontactwiththeoutsideworld・Atthesametime,theEnglishlanguagehasbecomethemostwidespreadmediumofinternationalcommunication.
4、MoreandmoreChinesepeopleuseEnglishastheirsecondlanguage,evensomeChinesestudentsgoabroadtofurthertheireducation.ThefollowingisareportfromaBritishmagazine-TheEconomist(2003:31&51):ChinesestudentsarefloodingintoBritishuniversities.Seenfromcloseto,Britain^universitiesareinasorrystate:overcrowded,c
5、ash-strapped,anddemoralized・Butfromfarawaytheycanlookveryattractive・Theirmarketingtoforeignstudentsisexcellent,especiallyinChina,whereeducatingchildrenabroadisincreasinglyfashionable.Thelatestfirmfingers,from2001,showaround18,000ChinesestudentsinBritishhighereducation.Thatmakesthenthelargestgr
6、oupoutofatotalof143,000foreigners.Anditisa71%increaseon2000preliminaryfigurefor2002showsafurtherincreaseof67%,takingthelikelytotalover25,000.Somequestionswillariseinone'sbrains:Aretheycompatiblewiththewesternculture?DoestheEnglishlanguagetheyhavelearnedinChinaenablethemtocommunicatewithBritish
