3、mmigrantfromMayenintheEifelregion,andSarahwasfromtheMennonitefarmingnearDayton,Ohio;shewasdisownedformarryingJohnandconvertingtoRomanCatholicism.Theodorewasthetwelfthofthirteenchildren(theninthofthetensurviving).ThepopularsongwriterPaulDresser(1857–1906)wa
4、shisolderbrother.From1889to1890,TheodoreattendedIndianaUniversitybeforedroppingout..Withinseveralyears,hewaswritingfortheChicagoGlobenewspaperandthentheSt.LouisGlobe-Democrat.HewroteseveralarticlesonwriterssuchasNathanielHawthorne,WilliamDeanHowells,JohnBu
5、rroughs,andinterviewedpublicfiguressuchasAndrewCarnegie,MarshallField,ThomasEdison,andTheodoreThomas.Afterproposingin1893,hemarriedSaraWhiteonDecember28,1898.Theyultimatelyseparatedin1909,partlyasaresultofDreiser'sinfatuationwithThelmaCudlipp,theteenagedau
6、ghterofaworkcolleague,butwereneverformallydivorced. In1919DreisermethiscousinHelenRichardsonwithwhomhebegananaffairwithsado-masochisticelements.TheyeventuallymarriedonJune13,1944LiterarycareerHisfirstnovel,SisterCarrie,publishedin1900,tellsthestoryofawoma
7、nwhofleeshercountrylifeforthecity(Chicago)andtherelivesalifefarfromaVictorianideal.Itsoldpoorlyandwasnotwidelypromotedlargelybecauseofmoralobjectionstothedepictionofacountrygirlwhopursuesherdreamsoffameandfortunethroughrelationshipstomen.Thebookhassinceacq
