3、SUREMENTOFATOMICSODIUMDENSITYINTHESSMEEXITPLANELeslieE.Bauman*INTRODUCTIONThemeasurementofatomicsodiumconcentrationintheT'FB019firingofApril1990issignificantinthatitrepresentsthefirstmeasurementofdensityattheexitplaneofthespaceshuttlemainengine(SSME).ITheknowledgeofthesodiumdensity,combinedwiththec
4、ertaintythattheexitplaneoftheplumeisopticallythinatthesodiumD-linewavelengths,providesessentialinformationforevaluationofdiagnostictechniquesusingsodiumatoms,suchasresonantDopplervelocimetry'_fortemperature,pressure,andvelocitythroughhighresolutionfluorescentlineshapeanalysis.Thetechniqueusedforthe
5、sodiumatomlinetransmission(SALT)measurementsisthatofresonantabsorptionemissionusingahollowcathodelampasthereferencesource.ThelampprovidesnarrowbandsodiumD-lineemissionaswellasnearbyneonlinesforreferencemeasurements.Thereferenceisessentialtoaccountforsucheffectsasfluctuationsinthesourceemission,tran
6、smissionlossesthroughbeamsteeringorfoginthepath,etc.Thedetectionsystemisapolychromator,whichseparatestheneonandsodiumlinesbutspectrallyintegratesthelines.TheSALTmeasurementswerereportedatthe1990AdvancedEarthtoOrbitPropulsionConferenceandaresummarizedhereforclarity.Pre-andpost-firingoftheenginethere
7、ferenceintensitiesofthesodiumandneonlinesweremeasured;thesesignals(correctedforbackground),INa,0andINe,0,werestablewithasignal-to-noise(S/N)ratioof600to1.Duringthetest,measuresweremadeofthetransmittedsignal
