2、orporationofasphericlensesincomplexlenssystemcanprovidesignificantimagequalityimprovement,reductionofthenumberoflenselements,smallersize,andlowerweight.Recently,ithasbecomepracticaltomanufactureasphericglasslensesusingdiamond-grindingmethods.Theevolut
3、ionofthemanufacturingtechnologyisdiscussedforaspecificasphericglasslens.Whenaprototypeall-glasslenssystem(80mmefl,F/2.5)wasfabricatedandtested,itwasobservedthattheimagequalitywassignificantlylessthanwaspredictedbytheopticaldesignsoftware.Thecauseofthe
4、degradationwasidentifiedasthelargeasphericelementinthelens.Identificationwaspossiblebyprecisionmappingofthespatialcoordinatesofthelenssurfaceandthentransformingthisdataintoanappropriateopticalsurfacedefinedbyderivedgridsagdata.Theresultingopticalanaly
5、sisyieldedamodeledimageconsistentwiththatobservedwhentestingtheprototypelenssysteminthelaboratory.Thisinsightintoalocalizedslope-errorproblemallowedimprovementsinthefabricationprocesstobeimplemented.Thesecondfabricationattempt,theresultingasphericlens
6、providedremarkableimprovementintheobservedimagequality,althoughstillfallingsomewhatshortofthedesiredimagequalitygoal.Inparallelwiththefabricationenhancementeffort,opticalmodelingofthesurfacewasundertakentodeterminehowmuchsurfaceerroranderrortypeswerea
7、llowabletoachievethedesiredimagequalitygoal.Withthisknowledge,finalimprovementsweremadetothefabricationprocess.Thethirdprototypelensachievedthegoalofopticalperformance.Rapiddevelopmentoftheasphericglasslenswasmadepossiblebytheinteractiverelationshipbe
