4、3-dimensionalcoppercluster,Cu7.Watermoleculesareadsorbedontheclustersequentiallyuntilfullsaturationatwhichnodirectwater–coppercontactisstericallypossible.Theadsorptionisdrivenmainlybytheoverlapbetweenthep-orbitalofOatomoccupiedbythelonepairandthe3d-orbitalsofcopper,fromwhichafractionalchargeisp

5、romotedtothe4s-orbitaltoaccommodatethechargetransferfromwater.WaterdissociationontheCu7clusterwasinvestigatedatbothlowandhighwatercoverage.ItwasfoundthatwaterdissociationintoOHandHisexothermicbutisinherentlyahightemperatureprocessatlowcoverage.Athighcoverage,thereactionbecomesmoreexothermicwith

6、fastkinetics.Inbothcases,watercancatalyzethereaction.ItwasfoundthatdirectdissociationoftheOHspeciesisendothermicwithasignificantlyhigherbarrieratbothlowandhighcoverage.However,theOHspeciescanreadilyreactwithanotheradjacenthydroxylgrouptoformanOadatomandwatermolecule.Ourstudiesindicatethatthebasi
