2、3,000articlestakenfromtwonewspapersineachofthesixcountrieswereanalysedovertwoseparatethree-monthperiodsin2007and2009/10.Afurther1,900articleswereexaminedfromtheeightothernationalBritishnewspapersoverthesameperiodstogiveamorecomprehensivepictureofclimatescepticismintheUKprintmedia.T
3、hemainaimsofthestudyweretotrackanyincreaseintheamountofspacegiventoscepticalvoicesoverthetwoperiodsandtomapsignificantdifferencesbothbetweencountriesandwithintheprintmediaofthesamecountry.Becausewewerealsointerestedinexploringwhethertherewasacorrespondencebetweentheprevalenceofscep
4、ticalvoicesandthepoliticalleaningofanewspaper,anexampleofaleft-leaningandaright-leaningnewspaperwereselectedinmostcountries.Beforethecontentanalysis,PolesApartgivesanoverviewofclimatescepticismindifferentcountries,andparticularlyintheUSA,andsuggeststhatitispredominatelyanAnglo-Saxo
5、nphenomenon.Itthensurveyspastresearchontheprevalenceofscepticisminthemediaaroundtheworld,againdrawingadistinctionbetweencountriesliketheUSA,theUK,andAustralia,whereithasoftenbeenpresentinpartsofthemedia,andthedevelopingworldandcontinentalEuropewhereithasbeenlargelyabsent.PolesApart
6、goestoconsiderablelengthstodescribethelargevarietyoftypesofclimate-scepticalvoicesthatexist:fromthosewhoarescepticalthattheworldiswarming,tothosewhoarescepticalabouttheinfluenceofhumansinthewarming,tothosewhoarescepticalaboutthepaceandextentofitsimpacts,tothosewhoarescepticalaboutw
7、hetherurgentactionandgovernmentspendingarenecessarytocombatit.Theanalysisattemptedtoseparatethedifferenttypesofscepticalvoices,theirbackground(professionalorotherwise),andinwhichpartofanewspapertheyweremostlikelytoappear.Themainfindingsofthecontentanalysisfromthesix-countrycomparat
