2、actorofthepaththatleadstoliberation.Withoutthatfactortherecanbenoliberation,itneedstobewellunderstoodbecauseitconcernswhatyouactuallydo.Oneneedstoputinaverysubtleefforttoabandonthedefilements.Somuchofoureffortcomesfromthewrongplace,fromasenseofcontrol,asenseof3‘me’and‘
3、mine’,thatittendstomakethewheelofsasāragoaroundfaster,ratherthanallowingeverythingtostop.Oftenpeoplegetextremelyconfusedabouthowmuchefforttoputin,andwhenandhowtoapplyit.Sometimespeopleputheapsofeffortintotheirpractise,andendupjustgettingheadaches,beingtenseandup-tight
4、,andneverfindinganydegreeofpeaceandclarityintheirminds.Atothertimespeopleputforthnoeffort,astheyusedtosayinThailandthey‘justeatandsleeplikeadog’,andtheydon’tgetanywhereintheirpractise.Theynevergetanyclarity,deepinsight,oranyhappinessbornofliberation.SotheBuddhataughtth
5、everysubtlepointofwhatrighteffortis,andwhereitcomesfrom.Basicallyrighteffortcomesfromrightview,andwhenit’swholesome,itleadstothepathofliberation.Wheneffortcomesfromwrongview–inparticulartheviewof‘me’and‘mine’–thenitwillalwaysleadtomoresuffering.It’sinterestingtonoticet
6、hesourceofthateffort.Notsomuchwhetheroneisputtingfortheffort,orfocusingonwhatthegoalis,buttostartoffbyfindingoutwhatthesourceofthateffortis.Ifthesourceofthateffortiscomingfromrightview,fromanappreciationofthesufferingofexistence,theBuddhasaid,“Itislikeperceivingoneshai
7、rbeingonfire”,theeffortthatresultsfromthatperceptionwouldbeonehundredpercentefforttosolvetheproblem,toescapefromthedangerofbeingburnt.Inthesameway,ifonetrulyhasafullunderstanding,oratleastfaithintheproblemofsuffering,of14dukkha,thateffortwillusuallyresultnotfromanego,o
