2、erson;thestoryisasnearasmygrandfathertoldit.AnotherMan’sWarNewBeginningsWell,Isupposemystorybeganin1935,Iwastwenty-six,livinginaYorkshireminingvillage,andworkingasafitterinthelocalcoalmine,andthinkingthattherewasmuchmoretolife.Thenoneday,Isawanadvertisementinthenewspaper;thatTh
3、eRoyalAirForcewasrecruitingforskilledmen.So,Iapplied,andpassedatradetestandmedical,andinnotimeatall,Iwasin,IwasactuallyintheRoyalAirForce.Aftereightweeksofsquarebashingandphysicaltraining,Ipassedout,andwaspostedtotheRoyalAirforceschooloftechnicaltraining.Thiswasatwelvemonthscou
4、rse,whichentailedalotofhardwork,butIquicklygotintotheswingofthings,andaftertwelvemonths,Ipassedout,andwaspostedtoasquadronatMildenhallinSuffolk.Iwaspostedtotheworkshop,andthatwaswheremyRAFcareerbegan.IspenttwoveryhappyyearsatMildenhall,Imadesomegreatfriendsthere,andwewereonebig
5、happyfamily.Thenoneday,Isawontheroutineordersboard,thatIwasgoingtobepostedtoSingapore.IfeltveryprivilegedtohavebeenchosentogotoSeletarSingapore,becauseitwaswellknown,thatthiswasabrilliantposting.So,aftersixweeksembarkationleave,IboardedtheshipatBirkenhead.Itwasalongvoyage,butve
6、ryinterestingforamanlikeme,whohadneverreallysteppedfootoutofYorkshire.WedisembarkedatPortSaid,andhere,wegotourfirsttasteofhotweather.WeeventuallyarrivedinSingapore,andaswearrivedatSeletar,therewereshoutsfromtheairmen,“Getyourkneesbrown”.Singaporewasanotherworld,Iloveditinstantl
